Arches, half-rounds, octagons, trapezoids, transoms, and other non-rectangular openings built to a template.
Rectangular windows come in standard sizes. These do not. A radius that is a quarter inch out, or a rake angle a degree off, shows immediately once the unit is in the wall and there is no adjusting it afterwards.
So we take a physical template off the actual opening rather than trusting the old unit's dimensions, and the replacement is manufactured to that template. It is slower and it is the only way these come out right.
Openings That Need a Template
A fogged arch or half-round
The unit above a door or picture window has failed while the rectangular units below are still clear.
A raked trapezoid
The angled unit following a vaulted or post-and-beam roofline. Every one is a different angle.
An octagon or circle
Usually in a stairwell, a bath, or a gable end, and almost never a stock size.
Transoms over an entry
The units above the front door that no longer seal, often several in a row that must match.
An entryway assembly
Sidelights, transoms, and an arch that all have to line up visually with the door and each other.
A builder-original no longer made
The original manufacturer's line is discontinued, so a like-for-like swap is not available.
How We Do It

Template the opening physically
Taken off the wall itself, not off the old unit, because the old unit may never have fitted properly.
- Step two
Match the visual details
Radius, rake angle, sightlines, and grille pattern matched to the surrounding windows so it does not read as a replacement.
- Step three
Confirm glass and tempering
Glass package chosen and any tempering requirement for the location confirmed before the order goes in.
- Step four
Install, flash, trim to match
Set, flashed, insulated, and trimmed to the existing detail, inside and out.
Eichler-Era Walls Need These More Than Most
Sunnyvale's Eichler-era and post-and-beam homes bring raked trapezoids and tall fixed clerestory glass that standard sizes cannot serve. Specialty Shape Questions
Longer than a rectangular unit, typically six to ten weeks from template rather than three to five. Complex shapes and matched sets take the upper end.
Usually yes. Grille pattern, bar width, and profile can be specified so the new unit reads as part of the original set rather than an obvious swap.
Some shapes can, some cannot. Trapezoids and octagons can often be built as awnings or casements. True arches and half-rounds are almost always fixed, because there is no practical way to hang a curved sash.
Yes, and it is a common job when the arch has fogged but the units below are fine. We match the new arch to the existing frames so the assembly still looks deliberate.
